Beyond the Action: Sports & Street Photography

Safari Challenge

Great photography doesn’t always come from pointing your camera at the most obvious thing happening.

For this PPSCV Photo Safari Challenge, we’re heading to Slam Jose for an afternoon of sports and street photography—with three challenge prompts designed to push you to look differently, try something outside your usual approach, and come back with stronger photographs.

Think of it as part photo walk, part creative challenge. You don’t have to compete, and you don’t have to be an expert. Come shoot, meet other photographers, experiment, and challenge yourself.

WHERE WE’RE MEETING

Meet here first:
The Tech Interactive
201 S Market St
San Jose, CA 95113

Meet us outside the front doors before we head over together.

Safari location:
Slam Jose
1 Paseo de San Antonio
San Jose, CA

If you have trouble finding the group, text 669-242-1724.

AFTER THE SAFARI

Not ready to head home at 2pm?

We’ll have an optional post-Safari hangout at San Jose Bar & Grill for food, drinks, conversation, and probably an unreasonable amount of discussion about the photographs we just made.

GET READY BEFOREHAND

Open the Photo Safari Challenge app before the event to see the prompts, read the complete rules and get familiar with how submissions and voting work.

Come with whatever camera you have--mirrorless, DSLR, compact, or phone--it all works.

THE CHALLENGE

You’ll have three prompts to work with during the Safari:

DECISIVE MOMENT
Anticipate the instant when everything comes together.
Look for peak action, gesture, collision, anticipation, or the instant that changes the story.

LAYERS
Build depth by making different parts of the frame contribute to the photograph.
Look for foreground, middle ground, background, reflections, framing, overlapping subjects, and visual relationships.

REACTION
Capture what happens because of the action.
Look for celebration, frustration, tension, connection, surprise, spectators, teammates, and emotion.

The goal isn’t to check three boxes. The prompts are there to make you slow down, notice more, and make photographs you might not have made otherwise.

HOW THE PHOTO SAFARI CHALLENGE WORKS

Shoot with us from 12:00–2:00 PM. Afterward, choose your strongest photograph for each prompt and submit it through the Photo Safari Challenge app.

Images will be shared anonymously for voting, with winners selected for each prompt and an overall Best in Show.

And yes, there’s a trophy—sort of.

The Safari Champion takes possession of the PPSCV Safari Champion medallion, along with the corresponding glory and bragging rights, until somebody takes it from them at the next Safari.

Try something different. Challenge yourself. Grow your photography.
