Print Competition Rules

SECTION C. MONTHLY COMPETITION RULES:

Be it that PPA Lighting Specifications be accepted as guidelines for the PPSCV Print Competition.

  1. PHOTOGRAPHIC COMPETITION RULES:
    1. CLASSIFICATION OF ENTRIES
      1. Studio Portrait Photographic image of a subject in a studio type environment.
      2. Environmental Portrait - Photographic image of a subject in an environment other than a studio.
      3. Social / Special Event (Wedding)- Photographic image pertaining to Weddings, Bar/Bat Mitzvahs, Quinceanera, reunions, parties, or other social events are suggested for the this category.
      4. Unclassified/Illustrative Creative, scenic, photographic art, photojournalism, etc are suggested for this category.
      5. Wedding Album
      6. Folio
      7. Commercial/Industrial - Tearsheets (if applicable) must be enclosed in an envelope and attached to the top center on the back of the print.
      8. Scientific/Technical - Photographic prints and/or transparencies in the field of industrial and technical photography. A statement of purpose must accompany the photograph or transparency. The statement of purpose must be typed and have no more than 25-50 words.
    2. PRINT COMPETITION
      1. No print can be entered into PPSCV monthly competition more than twice. Any print receiving a score of 70 or greater may not be entered again into any PPSCV monthly competition.
      2. A minimum of 10 entries is required to hold a monthly print competition.
      3. Prints must be entered by the maker and ONLY the maker.
      4. Each member may enter two (2) prints per regular competition or four (4) prints for expanded competition.
      5. Entry must be 8x10 or 10x10 only, mounted and unframed. No other sizes will be accepted. Dimensions are in inches.
      6. There must be no studio or photographer's name on the front of the entry. On the back the maker must attach a Print Comp label with their name (no studio names), print title, and print category filed in. Untitled as a title is unacceptable and lack of any of the aforementioned disqualifies the print from judging.
      7. Prints must be removed from their cases and presented to the committee.
      8. Deadline for entries is 15 minutes prior to the start of the meeting.
      9. Judging: The rules will be as follows:
        1. The prints will be voted upon by a panel of three-five judges appointed by the Print Committee Chairperson.
        2. No discussion is allowed during the judging except according to the challenge rules. Any judge may challenge a score given a particular print, at which time they may present a short argument either pro or con, and others may respond. There will be an automatic challenge anytime there is a point spread of ten points or more off the average score. The Jury Chairman may recall a print for review, and will act as a fifth judge if needed.
    3. AWARDS
      1. Maroon ribbons will be awarded to 70 to 75 of the possible score. The ribbon will state "Honorable Mention".
      2. Gold ribbons will be awarded to 76 to 79 of the possible score. The ribbon will state "Selected for Exhibition".
      3. Blue ribbons will be awarded to the top 80% and higher of possible score. The ribbon will state; "Outstanding Photography Award".
      4. White ribbons will be awarded to the "Print of the Month" for each category. The ribbon will state; Portrait, Social Event, Commercial or Unclassified, Print of the Month, PPSCV
      5. In order to award print of the month in any category, a minimum of five prints and three makers must be entered in any category. If commercial and unclassified, or portrait and social event have five prints and three makers, then print of the month will be given to the print with the most points with the two sub-groups. Print of the month will be given for the category entered.
      6. The Newsletter cover print will be selected by highest scoring of the competition.
    4. PRINT CRITIQUE
      1. Prints of up to 16x20 may be submitted for critique during regular Print Competition months.
      2. One print per maker is allowed for critique.
      3. Standard print submission rules apply to prints submitted for critique.
      4. Print critique is contingent on approval of the Print Comp Chairperson.
