Monthly Competition: The Basics

One of the Member Benefits is being able to participate in the Print Competitions and in order to get the most benefit from Print Competition you have to participate. Other benefits as a result from participating in print competition is learning how you can improve your technical photographic skills, posing skills, image making skills and print presentation. Listed below are most of the key points for the monthly print competitions, if you have any questions that are not answered below please contact the Print Comp Chairperson directly.

  • Who can participate in the monthly Print Competitions?
    • Any member in good standing may participate in the monthly print competition.
  • When are the monthly Print Competitions?
    • The dates and type of monthly print competition are listed on the Calendar page.
  • What types of monthly Print Competitions are there?
    • There are two types of monthly competition; Regular which allows for 2 prints per maker  and Expanded which allows for 4 prints per maker.
  • What are the print requirements for monthly Print Competition?
    • The print sizes allowed are 8×10, 10×10, 8×12 (inches), must be mounted and unframed. No maker or studio name or logo may appear on the image.
  • What are the categories/classifications for submissions?
    • The categories are as follows: Studio Portrait, Environmental Portrait, Social / Special Event, Unclassified / Illustrative, Wedding Album, and Commercial / Industrial.
  • What are the steps and requirements for enteing prints at a monthly Print Competition?
    • Only the Maker may enter their prints and must collect them after the competition.
    • Each print must have a Print Comp label on the back filled in with the Makers name (not studio), print title, and print category. Labels are available from the Print Comp Chair.
    • The entries must be turned in no later than 15 minutes prior to the start of the meeting.
  • Is it possible to get only a critique and if so what are the requirements?
    • Yes it is.
    • One print per member up to 16×20 may be submitted during Regular Print Competition months.
    • Print critique is contingent on approval of the Print Competition Chairperson.
  • How are the prints judged?
    • The prints are judged using the 12 Elements of a Merit Images as used by the Photographic Exhibitions Committee of PPA.
  • Why are the 12 Elements of a Merit Image important?
    • The 12 Elements have been defined as necessary for the success of an art piece or image. Any image, art piece, or photograph will reveal some measure of all twelve elements, while a visually superior example will reveal obvious consideration of each one.
